When She Arrived...

all conversations ceased. A hundred pairs of eyes shifted uneasily around the room, looking anywhere but at her. Shoes, ceilings, and hands where suddenly quite interesting. People couldn't get there eyes off them. The girl was hurt. She hadn't known what to expect. But she had hoped that it wouldn't be like this. As she began to sulkily make her way toward her seat, something her mother had said that morning flew into her mind.
"Shimmer, no matter how they react to who you are, you have nothing to be ashamed of."
She threw back her shoulders and held her head high. Crossing the room boldly, she fluttered her wings like a butterfly. Gliding gracefully over head. She soon settled in her seat. She tried to appear confident, ignoring her racing heartbeat. The eyes were fixed on her now, but she looked away. She glanced at the room's reflection in the glass window and smiled that day.
The image she saw was fantastic and new. Of all of the faces, hers was the only one blue. On her planet it was beautiful. On Earth it was strange. Her face, deep blue like the galaxy, swirls of simmering white danced along her cheekbones, and hairline. Her hair was a shiny black, curly and fine. She had two horns twisting out of her head.  Her eyes were a degree larger than humans and purple in color, most said. Two white fangs poked out of her closed lip grin. With her wings tucked snugly behind, she turned her head toward them. They stared back at her, still unsure what to think. Meeting would soon commence with this alien in her chair. Would the scholars be kind to this otherworldly species? The question floated in the air as three more filed in though quiet and discreet.
A great day for the Earth, who had made this alliance. The planets working together to improve mathematics and science.

Do You Think It Could Work?

Author's Note: The first sentence to this scene is a writing prompt, As most prompts usually do this scene snowballed and became something of its own. It was fun to write. I hope it was fun to read. If you would like to use this scene as a story-starter that's totally cool. Be creative! If you like Shimmer, my insecure alien who puts on a show of confidence at the first meeting of inelegant life forms, then ask me in the comments to write more about her and I will. It may be an interesting thing to give her a background and perhaps learn more about her planet.
